Buyer verification

Updated:

Proof belongs next to the claim.

A serious tea quote should let the buyer connect every material claim to a named legal party, a current record and a contract clause. This page states what the ODM Tea website can explain and what the quotation still has to prove.

Tea gardens in the Fujian mountains

Who is the legal party?

The ODM Tea website is operated by Xiamen Xidansi Supply Chain Management Co., Ltd., registered in Jimei District, Xiamen, Fujian, China under Unified Social Credit Code 91350211MAKM5F5R49. Enter that code on the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System — China's official business register — to see the registered name, status, legal representative, date of establishment and business scope.

Check that the business scope covers goods import and export and food sales, and that the seller on the proforma invoice, the beneficiary of the payment and the exporter on the customs declaration are this company or are named with their relationship to it. A difference between any of those is the first question to ask.

How do you find out who makes a branded tea?

Read the pack, then the registers. A retail pack names the brand owner or the importer, and often the packer; a company register confirms who that company is and who owns it. The garden or factory behind a large brand is rarely published, and it cannot be inferred from the brand name, a photograph or a search result.

Brand ownership as stated by the owners themselves
BrandOwnerWhere it is stated

The same method applies to any supplier, including this one: a brand, a logo or a picture is a starting point, and the evidence is the legal party on the documents. For a private-label or white-label product, the brand owner is the party answerable for the label, and the producer is whoever the contract names.

Due-diligence sequence

Seven checks before approval.

Use the same sequence for a sack, a container or a private-label run. A certificate logo without scope, or a price without a specification, does not close any of these checks.

Questions buyers ask

Does a photograph prove ownership of a garden or factory?

No. An image shows a place or process; it does not prove ownership, control or certification, and some still images on this site are AI-generated illustrations. Those points must be tied to the legal seller, production party and supporting records in the quotation pack.

What should a buyer verify before paying a deposit?

The legal seller and beneficiary, the producer or packer, product specification, current certification scope where relevant, sample approval, testing responsibility, Incoterm, document list, lead time and change-control process.

Which public registers can a buyer check without asking the seller?

Three. The National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System (gsxt.gov.cn) shows a Chinese company's registration, status and business scope from its Unified Social Credit Code. China Customs' enterprise import and export credit disclosure platform (credit.customs.gov.cn) shows an exporter's customs registration and credit status, including any Advanced Certified Enterprise (AEO) status. CNCA's national certification and accreditation information service (cx.cnca.cn) validates a certificate number issued by a certification body in China.

Are website specification ranges shipment guarantees?

No. Website and PDF ranges help frame an enquiry. The signed specification and sales contract govern the actual lot, packing, testing, documents and acceptance criteria.

Who owns Lipton tea?

In most markets the Lipton tea brand belonged to ekaterra, the tea business Unilever agreed in November 2021 to sell to CVC Capital Partners Fund VIII. That sale excluded Unilever's tea business in India, Nepal and Indonesia and its interests in the Pepsi Lipton ready-to-drink joint ventures, so the owner depends on the country and the product.

Who owns Twinings?

Associated British Foods, which lists Twinings — blending tea since 1706 — in its grocery division.

Is Lipton or Twinings tea vegan?

A plain black or green tea bag contains only tea, but flavoured, sweetened, milk or instant products can include milk, honey or other ingredients, and recipes differ by country. Check the ingredient list of the exact product sold in your market.

Which tea do coffee chains use?

Chains rarely publish the estate or supplier behind their tea. What can be verified is what the chain itself publishes — the tea brand on the menu and the ingredient list. A claim that a named supplier or origin is behind a chain's tea should be treated as unverified unless the chain or the supplier states it.
